Telnet

A protocol for transferral of information over the internet. Users would type text commands into their terminal and receive a textual response from the server.

Message boards and text-based games were a common use of the telnet protocol in the early days of the internet. The telnet technology has mostly been superseded by SSH, an encrypted form of text-based command transfer.
