In a graphical user interface on a computer monitor, a toolbar is a row, column, or block of on-screen buttons or icons that, activate certain functions of the program when clicked. The first toolbar appeared on the Xerox Alto computer in 1973 and they now form the core of the interface and navigation for web pages and software packages.
