Flash is popular technology for authoring web content. It allows designers the scope to create animated and visually impactful content very quickly, but unlike regular HTML pages cannot be updated as easily or cheaply. A Flash movie is a type of rich media that can combine interactivity, video and sound. The format was originally created by Macromedia, which also made an authoring tool to create Flash movies, but is now produced by Adobe. It is often used on the internet to create visually attractive advertising and games. Websites can be built entirely in Flash, but this practice is strongly discouraged as not all web browsers can see Flash content (which reduces the active reach of the website) and it is almost impossible for search engines to effectively identify and rank the importance of content (massively reducing traffic that otherwise would have come through search engine optimisation).  Flash is sometimes referred to Shockwave Flash.
