Linux is a kind of operating system that runs on PCs and is open source. There are many communities and companies creating Linux systems so it comes under many brands and names, but the core functionality remains the same and they are completely compatible with each other.

Globally, it is not as popular as Microsoft Windows for consumers, but is free and a popular system for the technical niche market and for web servers. Companies such as Red Hat offer commercial Linux distributions with technical support for corporate use.
